At the same time, Cerberus was linked to rumours of Commander Shepard's return, which became for some time a favourite topic of conspiracy theorists, although it later proved to have some basis in fact.įollowing Shepard's destruction of the Bahak relay and the batarian colony Aratoht, Cerberus was blamed for what was regarded as an act of almost unprecedented mass murder. Following the publication of several reports post-war, Cerberus's penchant for experimentation in illegal technologies, including genetic manipulation and 'geth' (in fact Reaper) devices such as dragon's teeth, became inextricably linked to the group's public image a grisly joke that such experiments invariably ended in the research staff being accidentally killed or transformed into husks gained memetic status on the extranet (as did the memetic image Skeleton With Magic Sword, for reasons that remain unclear). In the course of the conflict it was reported that Cerberus personnel had been located carrying out private military research, and engaged in combat with Alliance and Citadel Council troops. While for most of its history Cerberus maintained that its purpose was simply to protect humanity's interests, claiming that the Systems Alliance was too inefficient and/or corrupt to fulfil its obligations to its people in this regard, the organisation was viewed by many as pursuing a totalitarian agenda with regard to humanity, and its stance on non-humans motivated by xenophobia.Īlthough known to the Alliance since the public circulation of a manifesto of sorts shortly after the group's inception - it was media coverage which, derisively, dubbed the group's anonymous founder an 'illusive man', a moniker which the founder evidently adopted afterwards - it was not until the Eden Prime War that Cerberus rose to prominence (although it is widely speculated in hindsight that the group was engaged in widespread activity prior, both in infiltrating human industrial and military manufacturers and carrying out clandestine operations).

Cerberus was a human criminal paramilitary group, originating in the wake of the Relay 314 Incident.
